Each post was turned slowly on a lathe, shaped whole rather than cut and joined, in a form meant to outlast the person using it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the early 1900s, Swedish carvers returned to that austere monastic silhouette during a wave of national romantic design, dressing it in rosettes, garland, a turned finial, and bobbin work.
