She kept spider monkeys at the Casa Azul in Coyoacán and painted them throughout her work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere the composition has been carried onto a round rattan top, the image laid down by hand, worked into with paint, and finished under a deep glaze that has softened with age. Decoupage of this kind traces back to eighteenth-century Venice, where cabinetmakers built printed imagery and hand-painted detail under many layers of varnish into furniture of real standing.
