Light surface scratches across the well, consistent with age and use, and visible in the detail photographs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSweden spent the middle of the last century making glass better than almost anyone, and the best of it never needed to announce itself. This piece carries no mark on the base, which is how most Swedish glass of the period left the workshop — the object was the signature. What you can read instead is the making: the weight, the way the walls thicken and thin, the small variations no mould repeats.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colour runs deep brown at the rim and opens to a clear gold through the well, and it moves as the light does. The lustre sits on the surface rather than in the glass itself, so the highlights travel across it as you turn it in the hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMost of these have long stopped being ashtrays.
