Modernist Wood Sculpture of Two Faces
Modernist Wood Sculpture of Two Faces

Dimensions · H 17" × W 6"
Material · Carved from a single block of tropical hardwood, likely teak or acacia
Era · Circa mid-20th century
Origin · Undocumented, maker unrecorded
Condition · Excellent vintage condition. The carving is crisp across every plane and the wood has held a warm satin surface throughout.
Two faces come out of a single block, the larger drawn up and around the smaller so that the pair resolve into one mass rather than standing beside each other. The carver worked the whole thing without joining anything to it, which means every plane had to be found by taking wood away and nothing could be put back.
The treatment is Cubist in its geometry and Art Deco in its restraint. Each eye is closed to a single almond stroke, the nose reduced to two flat planes meeting along a ridge, the mouth cut as one shallow curve. That vocabulary ran through sculpture everywhere in the middle of the last century, and a carver working in it had to hold the proportion in his head and get it right the first time.
The wood is warm and straight in the grain, finished to a satin sheen that gathers light along every raised edge and turns the two profiles as you move around it. It rises from a turned circular foot and stands seventeen inches, which is enough to hold a console or a shelf without anything placed beside it.
